On March 22, Leonard Hawk, the first president of the American Rental Association (ARA), celebrated his 89th birthday, which was the next day on March 23, at his home with an open house.
Christine Wehrman, ARA’s executive vice president and CEO, visited with Hawk at the celebration, reminiscing about how the ARA began and looking through the association’s 50th anniversary book published in 2006.
Hawk organized the initial meeting of 21 rental store owners who would found the organization that would become the ARA. Hawk served as the association’s first president from 1956-58 and continues to reside in the Moline, Ill., area. He was among the first class inducted into the Rental Hall of Fame in 2001.
Hawk’s sons each continue in the equipment rental business.
