As an event professional, it is not only important to follow trends in fashion for your personal wardrobe, but to understand what is trending forward months in advance, so that you can dress your next event in style and impress your clients. There are a lot of fashionistas out there who are looking to you to create an event that is entertaining and fashion-forward.
Pantone is the leading authority on color for design industries, best known for its Pantone Matching System. Knowing what Pantone is and how to follow the seasonal color trends will prepare you months in advance, especially if you have clients contacting you a year before their event. Fashion and interior designers, graphic designers and florists follow the Pantone color system to match color swatches, as well as use Pantone to check in on what is trending from season to season.
Event professionals should use this tool as well so that they can inform their clients and potentially incorporate one or more of these color trends into their overall design theme.
Every year, Pantone declares a “Color of the Year.” This particular color is actually thought out over a year in advance by representatives from various nations who meet twice a year to present and debate on what this color is going to be.
The color ultimately connects to the spirit of the time or “zeitgeist,” so to speak. It truly represents what is going on culturally and economically in the world. When Pantone announced the 2012 color of the year, Tangerine Tango, the reasoning was that this color “provided the energy boost we needed to recharge and move forward.”
This year’s Color of the Year, Emerald, was chosen because its “vivid, verdant green enhances our sense of well-being further by inspiring insight, as well as promoting balance and harmony,” the organization stated.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says, “green is the most abundant hue in nature and symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world.”
Simply stated, fashion dictates the trends that will follow in home décor and ultimately event and wedding décor. Event professionals can start monitoring these trends early on, far before they hit the event world. Prepping for color trends
Emerald green, Pantone® color 17-5641, was recently named Color of the Year for 2013 by Pantone, Carlstadt, N.J.
Each year, Pantone releases a spring and fall color report, as well as the color of the year. In addition to Emerald, the spring 2013 fashion color report also includes African Violet, Pantone 16-3520; Dusk Blue, Pantone 16-4120; Monaco Blue, Pantone 19-3964; Grayed Jade, Pantone 14-6011; Tender Shoots, a pale green, Pantone 14-0446; Lemon Zest, Pantone 13-0756; Linen, Pantone 12-1008; Poppy Red, Pantone 17-1664; and Nectarine, Pantone 16-1360.
Perry Glickman, sales manager, Ultimate Textile, Paterson, N.J., says his company pays particular attention to the Pantone Color of the Year and Color Report. “It has significant effects across the textile industry and since we are always following fashion trends, the table linen business is no exception. Emerald will be a popular color for 2013 because of the announcement,” Glickman says.
He says the color report is a helpful tool. “Rental companies and suppliers must stay ahead of market needs to best service the industry, and brides and party planners expect color options to stay current,” Glickman says. “Any color that the spring report indicates is a preview of styles and trends expected so those will likely result in higher demand. Design insiders look to fashion for these cues. Likewise, rental stores should keep attuned to trends in design and fashion to stay one step ahead of the mainstream marketplace.”
However, it is one of many indicators to consider when looking to follow trends in party and event, says Joel Nevens, president, Jomar Table Linens, Ontario, Calif. Other factors include trend adoption history, timing and location.
“When we came out with a new line a few years ago, the Nova synthetic silk line, we took a look at the Pantone® colors for the coming seasons,” Nevens says, adding that the color palette is helpful, but does not ensure popularity.
“When they indicate the color of the year, the report may or may not indicate the color of the year for tablecloths. The fashion industry is ahead of the table linen industry,” he says.
“Most of us carry a range of colors in every fabric, so some of the colors may equate to what we have on hand. If not, then we have to determine whether the color of the year will make a good tablecloth color. Sometimes what is shown at a fashion show is not what is being used at events,” Nevens says. “Also, sometimes our colors fluctuate in popularity. The East and West coasts are ahead of the Midwest and the South in color changes. New York and Los Angeles may change before other areas.” — Whitney Carnahan
