ARA Professional Driver Education Program
01/06/2011

The implementation of the new Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) initiative by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) puts added pressure on rental company drivers to know the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, understand how to properly load, secure and unload equipment, and recognize the many roles they play as a driver.

The American Rental Association (ARA) Professional Driver Education Program is designed to help. This first-of-its kind, comprehensive, online, rental-specific driver education program features nine Web-based interactive modules that incorporate video of real-life construction and general tool scenarios as well as pre- and post-tests. Also included are a comprehensive exam and a Coaching Guide. The modules cover everything from loading, securing and unloading equipment to customer service and a DOT overview.

“Now more than ever, construction and general tool rental companies need to have drivers who are well-trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of the driving process,” says Carla Brozick, CAE, ARA’s senior director of education and training.

“This program, offered by ARA in conjunction with ARA Insurance, can assist in that effort and help your drivers stay in compliance with the new categories outlined in the FMCSA’s new CSA initiative. Under this new system, all violations will be counted. That could result in major fines and loss of time. Rental operators can’t afford that. This program offers the information your drivers need to know,” Brozick says.

Jeff Howe, manager with Anderson Rentals in Merriam, Kan., recently completed the program and agrees that it is an effective training resource. “The best part about the ARA Professional Driver Education Program is that it not only refreshed old training that was previously given to our drivers, but it added a few new things. It is good to keep fresh on laws as it keeps the drivers fresh as well about changing rules and regulations,” he says.

“For myself, it helped to show us the areas that our drivers need more training and education in without guessing. The tests show very clearly the areas that need to be gone over,” he says.

Drivers who successfully complete the nine curriculum modules and pass the final comprehensive exam receive a certificate of completion, a uniform patch, a hard-hat sticker and a wallet card.

ARA members can order program IDs at a fraction of the full price. Those who are covered by ARA Insurance receive additional benefits including a 10 percent discount off the price of the program for each employee enrolled and the rental business becomes eligible for auto insurance premium discounts at policy renewal based on the number of drivers who successfully complete the program.
