Business Profile — Ventura Rental Center, Ventura, Calif.

History: In 1978, Ron Holley moved his family from Modesto, Calif., to Ventura, Calif., to purchase a small homeowner and construction rental business, which had been founded in 1958. The company added party and event in the late 1980s, followed by expansion with branch locations. Holley retired in 2000 with his son-in-law, Ted Cook, taking over the construction and general tool operations while one of his daughters, Heidi Whitcomb, continued to run the party and special event side of the business in a separate location.

Locations: Four in the greater Ventura area, including two construction and general tool stores, a repair shop and Ventura Rental Party Center.

Construction and general tool product line: Compaction, compressors, concrete, earthmoving equipment, electrical and plumbing, generators and welders, homeowner, lawn and garden, material handling lifts, personnel lifts, pumps, small tools, trailers, trenching and trucks, the company also sells propane, pre-mixed concrete and moving supplies as well as new and used equipment.

Party and event product line: Arches, bars, beverage services, barbecues, canopies/tents, chairs, china, flatware, flooring, foodservice, glassware, lighting/heating, linens, lounge furniture, miscellaneous items, tables and umbrellas.

Employees: 45

Business breakdown: About half of the company’s revenue comes from construction rental, a third from party and event and the rest from general tool.
