Alastair Jones has been named vice president of sales and marketing for ARA Insurance Services, Kansas City, Mo. He replaces Mike Martinie, who retired earlier this year and is now an ARA Insurance Services Preferred Agent based in Olathe, Kan.
“Alastair brings a diverse background and a wealth of knowledge to ARA Insurance Services. We are thrilled to have him on our team and I’m certain that this will be a positive move forward for our organization,” says Phil Kelling, president and CEO, ARA Insurance Services.
The American Rental Association (ARA) formed ARA Insurance Services as a wholly owned subsidiary more than 30 years ago to serve the equipment rental industry and provide ARA members with insurance stability as well as the special coverages necessary to protect a rental business.
Jones will be responsible for appointing Preferred Agents across the United States who service ARA members as well as making sure Preferred Agents are well-trained to understand the unique aspects of the equipment rental industry and focused on meeting the needs of ARA members.
Jones was most recently director of marketing for the nonprofit and for-profit programs with the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents and has attained his Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation.
“I come from a production background and believe in niche marketing as well as true risk management and being a trusted advisor. ARA Insurance Services is in a position to provide that to ARA members and I see an opportunity in my role to help build and deliver that message through our Preferred Agents and the efforts we and the association make. The connection between the association and the insurance program is a huge service for ARA members,” Jones says.
“When you say ‘risk management,’ some people only think ‘insurance.’ We want to relate it more to sales and revenue as well as how the tools we can offer can impact their bottom line, the impact a single claim can have on profit margins and so on. We want to build a tool for agents, the association and store owners to use to further the risk management message and why it is important. That will be my challenge,” he says.
Jones, who is originally from Wales, earned a post-graduate degree in education and initially became a teacher. He says he came to America to coach soccer and also sold soccer tournaments and soccer tours before accepting an offer to join Liberty Mutual in Kansas City in 2000.
