Anytime Ralph Sjodin, manager of Crown Rental in Burnsville, Minn., attends a job fair, he takes a stack of employee recruitment brochures from the American Rental Association (ARA).

"They provide a great way to get a persons attention and then explain and show all of the areas available. Theyre an excellent tool to use," he says.

This past summer, he used the brochures at a local high school job fair to attract attention and offer students "solid information about the industry in a professional-looking way," he says. As a result, he hired four students who worked at his operation for the summer.

Charlie Neffle, CERP, president of All Occasions Event Rental in Cincinnati, uses the ARA party and event recruitment brochures during the interview process with potential candidates for jobs at his company.

"The brochure imparts a professional image, showing potential employees that this is a viable industry offering a career path," Neffle says. "We like that the Certified Event Rental Professional (CERP) certification is highlighted, too. It shows that potential employees can get continuing education in this industry. Its a good reinforcement."

Many rental operators are relying on these brochures, created by ARA in conjunction with ARA-member working groups. Three brochures are available for member use:

  • Service technician opportunities.

  • General equipment rental career options.

  • Party and event rental industry opportunities.

Each brochure offers an in-depth overview of that particular segment of the rental industry. Each provides potential candidates with a true look at what a career in rental can offer, according to Carla Brozick, ARAs director of education and training.

"We have had good response from members who use these brochures in their employee recruitment efforts," Brozick says. "They are eye-catching, colorful and packed with information that potential employees are looking for about the industry. They give a good picture of what the industry is, the career possibilities available and the skills needed to make a mark in this dynamic and exciting industry."

In addition to the brochures, ARA now offers recruitment posters that members can be display in their business, a community center, community college or any other outlet in which people congregate. The posters include space for ARA members to add information about their business.

"Together, the brochures and posters designed as resources for our members provide a consistent and professional marketing message to your prospective employees," Brozick says.
