NER launches equipment theft tip line
04/01/2006
The National Equipment Register (NER), a national database of equipment theft and ownership records, has created a 24-hour, national “Stolen Equipment Tip Line” (866) NER-TIPS (637-8477). The tip line provides a way for anyone with information about stolen equipment to help combat a growing problem for equipment owners.

The NER was established in 2001 to increase the recovery rate of stolen construction and agricultural equipment by improving the information available to law enforcement. NER also has developed a national equipment identification training program for law enforcement to encourage equipment investigations.

More than 40 law enforcement officials attended the special NER/American Rental Association Insurance Services seminar on how to identify equipment at The Rental Show in Orlando, Fla., in February.

“Although our primary purpose is to respond to inquiries from law enforcement, we have sometimes received calls from concerned citizens who have information about suspicious equipment. This type of call increased dramatically in 2005 and the ‘Stolen Equipment Tip Line’ is designed to encourage more of these calls and reward the caller where appropriate,” said David Shillingford, president of NER.

Under certain conditions rewards will be paid. Rewards have recently been paid to callers from California and New York for information that led to recoveries.

As a benefit of membership, American Rental Association members can register 1,000 pieces of equipment for free with NER.
