ARA Foundation and affiliates award 42 students scholarships

This past May, the ARA Foundation and its affiliate programs awarded $63,000 worth of scholarships to students who are pursuing their education at colleges, community colleges, technical schools or graduate schools for careers in the equipment rental industry.

A total of 42 students from across the United States and Canada received scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Many received multiple scholarships, which will go a long way to helping defray their educational costs.

“We had a terrific group of students who applied for these scholarships,” says Jenni Venema, ARA Foundation director of development. “These students had to outline their academic achievements and answer questions related to their future goals in the equipment rental industry. The ARA Foundation scholarship committee was very impressed with the time and care these students put into their applications. They will make outstanding future rental leaders and the ARA Foundation board is proud to be able to offer this scholarship program that can help these students achieve their educational dreams.”

Top recipient was Kylie Coffey from Busy Bee Jumpers & Tents in Whitman, Mass., who was awarded the ARA Foundation Leonard Hawk Founders Scholarship worth $3,000. Coffey attends Keene State College in Keene, N.H. She is grateful for the scholarship because it “will allow me to be exposed to numerous new ideas, people and places. It will allow me to learn and grow in ways that I probably do not even realize today. Thank you again very much.”

Other recipients and the scholarships they were awarded are:

ARA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships worth $2,000 each

Jessica Ahrns from Celina Tent in Celina, Ohio, attends Ohio State University in Columbus. “A whole-hearted thank you goes out to the ARA Foundation scholarship committee for making my life a little easier and more enjoyable and, at the same time, for minimizing the financial burden of my schooling,” she says.

Tyler Arlinghaus from Art’s Rental Equipment in Newport, Ky., attends Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights. “This scholarship will allow me to finish my academic career and be fully prepared to excel in the rental industry,” he says.

Emily Carey from Rental Supply d/b/a Grand Rental Station in Greensboro, N.C., attends Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. This scholarship “will not only allow me to achieve success in my future career, but it also will allow me to attend my first-choice school to gain a great education,” she says.

Elizabeth Gajewski from C & S Party Rentals d/b/a Party Plus Tent & Event Rentals in Biddeford, Maine, attends Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. “This generous scholarship will enable me to attend college and work toward a degree in business management, which I can put to use in my family’s rental business,” she says.

Lauren Harris from Point-of-Rental Systems in Grand Prairie, Texas, attends Southern Methodist University in Dallas. “Winning these awards gives me an extra push of confidence to continue to grow and learn in my current position of marketing sales rep for Point-of-Rental Systems. I am so thankful for these scholarships,” she says.

Daniel Imbro from Party Time Rental and Events in Little Rock, Ark., attends Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. “The ARA Foundation scholarship will open academic doors that will enable me to succeed after graduation,” he says.

Haley Reim from Redtail Equipment Rental in College Station, Texas, attends Texas A&M University, also in College Station. The scholarship “will allow me to focus on my studies to receive my business degree and not have to work the first year of college,” she says.

Michael Reimer from Midway Rental in Kalispell, Mont., attends Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Receiving this scholarship will “help me achieve success by going through school with minimal or no debt, further enabling me to one day reach
a level of success where I, too, can give back,”
he says.

Mackenzie Young with Bunce Rental/American Party Place in Tacoma, Wash., attends Oregon State University in Corvallis. This scholarship enables “me to attend the university that will allow me to obtain my degree in finance, which will make me able to pursue a career in the rental industry,” she says.

Andrew Yount with A-1 Equipment Rental in Morristown, Tenn., attends the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. “I will use the scholarship to finish my last year of education,” he says.

ARA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships worth $1,000 each

Robert Carpenter Jr. with Trico Lift in Millville, N.J., attends Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and will use the scholarship to help pay his remaining school costs. “I have been trying to avoid school loans as much as possible, so these scholarships are a huge help,” he says.

Anna Miller with Miller’s Hardware and Rental in New Wilmington, Pa., attends Taylor University in Upland, Ind. “The ARA Foundation scholarship will permit me to learn more about business and how to be successful in this industry,” she says.

David Spurlock with Pontrelli Fountain Co. in Gilbert, Ariz., attends Arizona State University in Tempe. “I can now further my education so I can better support my family,” he says.

Dylan Taylor with Ace Leasing Ltd. in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada, attends the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. “I am extremely honored to have been selected as a recipient for both the ARA Foundation and the Dorothy Wellnitz scholarships. With the ever-increasing cost of post-secondary education, these funds are greatly appreciated,” he says.

ARA Foundation Graduate Scholarships worth $2,000 each

Melanie Cougle with Perfect Party Place in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, attends Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario. “By receiving this scholarship, I will be provided with financial security that will allow me to focus on my education. This investment in my education will greatly benefit my future career in the rental industry by building a foundation of knowledge I can apply to my job. I cannot thank the ARA Foundation enough for the generous support,” she says.

Justin Marsh with United Rentals in Winchester, Va., attends Shenandoah University, also in Winchester. “I will benefit from the ARA Foundation scholarship by using it to further my business education and enhance my professional skill set. I feel extremely thankful to receive this award and excited to utilize my future MBA within the equipment rental industry,” he says.

ARA Foundation Vocational/Technical Scholarships worth $1,000 each

Hanna Collis with Taylor Rental in Whitesboro, N.Y., attends Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y. “I will benefit greatly from the scholarship I’ve received. It will push me into the right direction for the education I need,” she says.

Dereck Colwell with East Kentucky Rental & Supply in Hazard, Ky., attends Hazard Community Technical College. “On my own, I could have never afforded my last year of vo-tech. College is expensive, but thanks to the ARA Foundation, I will have something priceless: an education, a skill and a trade,” he says.

Shane Counts with Titan Machinery d/b/a Titan Rentals in East Helena, Mont., attends Helena College of Technology. Thanks to the scholarship, “I will not have as much stress on me to pay bills, so I can concentrate more on work and academics,” he says.

Spencer Johnson with General Rental Center in Little Falls, Minn., attends St. Cloud Technical and Community College, also in Little Falls. The scholarship “will help me get a head start on my school supplies, tuition and books, as well as help me in the future,” he says.

Miles Kocher-Cowan with Patten Industries in Elmhurst, Ill., attends Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill. “The ARA and the ARA Foundation offer everything I need to succeed in the rental industry, from specialized training to scholarships for school,”
he says.

Stacy Liebl with S & S Rental in Redwood Falls, Minn., attends Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn. The scholarship “will help me pay for my education,” she says.

ARA Insurance Scholarship worth $2,500

Elizabeth Gajewski with C & S Party Rentals d/b/a Party Plus Tent & Event Rentals in Biddeford, Maine, also was awarded an ARA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship of $2,000 for a total of $4,500 in funds.

ARA of California Scholarships worth $1,000 each

Roxanne Witz with Celebrations! Event Rentals and Tents in Roseville, Calif., attends the University of Phoenix. The scholarship “is helping me pursue my bachelor’s degree, which will help me gain more communication skills to better understand and help serve my customers in the rental business.”

Jordan Wygal with Bill’s Chairs for Affairs Party Rentals in Martinez, Calif., attends the Cal Poly campus in San Luis Obispo. This scholarship “has given me the opportunity to take ownership of my future as I begin to pursue a business degree,” she says.

ARA of Michigan Scholarships worth $500 each

Ronald Branch with The Rental Branch in St. Joseph, Mich., attends Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. The scholarship will allow “me to obtain my business degree at Hillsdale,” he says.

Scout Krueger with Rentalex of Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich., attends Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. “I’m trying to use as little student loans as I possibly can to minimize my debt when I graduate. This money will help me with that goal,” she says.

Shane Valliere with Taylor Rental Center in Petoskey, Mich., attends North Central Michigan College, also in Petoskey. This scholarship “will help alleviate the amount of school loans I have to take out,” he says.

Michelle Wormser with Barry’s Let’s Rent It West Bloomfield, Mich., attends Michigan State University in East Lansing. “With this scholarship, I will be able to pay for part of my college tuition,” she says.

ARA of New York Scholarships worth $1,000 each

Luba Kotovich with Casale Rent-All in Colonie, N.Y., attends Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. This scholarship “will assist me in funding my education and enable me to move forward in achieving my education goals,” she says.

Bryan Licata with Four Seasons Power Equipment in East Meadow, N.Y., attends Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. Receiving this scholarship “will assist me in completing my degree in mechanical engineering. One day, I hope to give back to the ARA, the ARA Foundation and the rental industry by applying the knowledge I have gained in both mechanical design and manufacturing,” he says.

ARA of North Carolina Scholarships worth $1,000 each

Emily Carey with Rental Supply d/b/a Grand Rental Station in Reidsville, N.C., also received an ARA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship of $2,000 for a total of $3,000 in scholarship funds.

Amanda Gordon with DeeJay’s Event Rentals in Raleigh, N.C., attends Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, N.C. This scholarship is “helping me further my education by allowing me to take additional classes, which will assist me in obtaining my degree sooner, as well as increase my working knowledge of general business, which I will apply to my position at DeeJay’s Event Rentals,” she says.

ARA of Ohio Scholarships worth $750 each

Olivia Boccabella with Taylor Rental in Avon, Ohio, attends Ohio University in Athens. “I am grateful for the scholarship because it will help me with college expenses,” she says.

Samuel Duvall with Reco Equipment d/b/a Bobcat of Pittsburgh in Morristown, Ohio, attends Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va. The scholarship will help “continue my undergraduate career,” he says.

Elizabeth Fromhold with Schulhoff Equipment Rental in Cincinnati attends the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. “Receiving this scholarship will allow me to pursue my education at the University of Alabama. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities this will give me,” she says.

Lindzi Hoersten with Delphos Rental Corp. in Delphos, Ohio, attends the University of Dayton in Dayton. “I will benefit from this scholarship by having $750 less money to borrow. I take pride in knowing that I am able to pay for the majority of my college tuition by working hard and being a dependable employee,” she says.

Alex Ponikvar with Sun Rental Center in Mentor, Ohio, attends Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. This assistance will help “me earn my college degree in criminal justice to one day own a security company, which will provide security for rental stores,” he says.

ARA Region Two/Ron Marshall Scholarships worth $500 each

ARA Region 10/Doug Mitchell Scholarship worth $1,500

Karen Van Staveren with Stayner Rental in Stayner, Ontario, Canada, attends St. Jerome’s University at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. “Thank you for this amazing opportunity. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my education and less on the financial burden that university will cause. It will provide me the opportunity to fulfill my dreams of post-secondary education in hopes of entering the rental field,” she says.

Bill Loomer Houston Area Rental Association Scholarship worth $2,000

Haley Reim with Redtail Equipment Rental in College Station, Texas, also was awarded a $2,000 ARA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship for a total of $4,000 in scholarship funds.

Texas Rental Association Scholarships worth $1,000 each

Robert Berryman with Nationwide General Rental Center in Amarillo, Texas, attends the University of Oklahoma in Norman. The scholarship “will permit me to learn more about business and how to be successful in this industry,” he says.

Walter Burke with 4-B Rental Source d/b/a Taylor Rental in Garland, Texas, attends Collin College in Plano, Texas. This scholarship “relieves stress off of my shoulders because going to school full time as well as working full time is a lot to take on. The TRA scholarship helps me be able to focus on school without worrying how to pay for it,” he says.

Lauren Harris with Point-of-Rental Systems in Grand Prairie, Texas, also received a $2,000 ARA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship for a total of $3,000 in scholarship funds.

Zenaida Hernandez with Taylor’s Rental Equipment Co. in Fort Worth, Texas, attends the University of Texas at Arlington. “Receiving this scholarship will help me finish my senior year and receive my degree in business management. I will make my parents proud by being the first in my family to graduate from college,” she says.

Darby Slack with Tejas Equipment Rental in McAllen, Texas, attends Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. “I have now completed my basics and can focus on my major and minor courses, criminal justice and psychology, linking them to the improvement of the rental industry by making it safer and more profitable,” she says.
