Kaplan honored with lifetime achievement award

Dan Kaplan, a rental industry expert and founder of Daniel Kaplan Associates, Morristown, N.J., recently served as a speaker at the annual European Rental Association (ERA) convention in Paris, but was later surprised to be presented with ERA’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the group’s awards dinner.

“I’ve consulted a lot in Europe and it was incredibly gratifying to receive the award. It was beyond shocking,” Kaplan says.

“It’s a wonderful recognition. For them to give a Lifetime Achievement Award to an American and a real true member of the American Rental Association (ARA), it is a tribute and reflective of the industry and what it has done,” he says.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the second honor recognizing Kaplan’s contributions to the equipment rental industry. In 2006 at The Rental Show in Orlando, Fla., he was formally inducted into the Rental Hall of Fame.

“Being named to the Rental Hall of Fame by the ARA also was very rewarding and gratifying for me. I love the rental industry,” he says.

As president of Hertz Equipment Rental Corp. from 1982 to 1997, he helped grow sales from $58 million to more than $500 million.

During his more than 25 years in the rental industry, Kaplan has purchased rental companies in the United States and Europe and has opened more than 100 greenfield rental locations around the world. He has worked with rental companies, dealers and manufacturers to launch rental operations in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. He has performed operational reviews in more than 2,000 rental locations.

He is the author of the 1994 book, “Service Success: Lessons From a Leader on How to Turn Around a Service Business.”

Also at the ERA convention, Ken Hughes, publisher of Rental Management, represented ARA and was the presenter for an educational session about social media and the rental industry.
