Help for rental newcomers

ARA’s new guide outlines what you need to know

The just released New to Rental Guide from the American Rental Association (ARA) is designed to help those wanting to enter the dynamic equipment rental industry learn what steps they should take.

This new guide covers all of the basic information needed to develop business plans and strategies:

  • The size of the industry.
  • Rental market segments.
  • The top five things you need to know when getting started.
  • A deeper look at operating a rental store.
  • Valuable resources that can help in all stages of your business’s growth.

“This guide is very informative. I wish we had access to all of this before we got in the business. We learned everything the hard way,” says Brendon Blood, general manager of Blood’s Catering & Party Rentals in White River Junction, Vt.

Marc Mandin, chief operating officer of 4-Way Equipment Rentals in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, agrees. “If potential rental operators read this document along with all of the referenced documentation, they should have a well-informed starting point.”

The guide addresses a real need, says Debby Schaller, ARA’s director of general member services. “We receive many inquiries from those who are looking to establish rental businesses in their markets. All are asking for guidance on what steps they need to take, what they need to be aware of, what issues they might face, what they need to know about insurance and what to do to be successful in this industry. This guide covers all of that and more. It really walks a potential owner through the process and offers that person important resources for more in-depth information.”

Before publishing this 36-page guide, ARA sent it to members who cater to different rental market segments. “We wanted our members’ feedback to make sure we were on target and that we didn’t miss anything,” Schaller says. “It was a wonderful collaborative process that made this guide a valuable, real-world tool for those who want to be part of this growing industry.”
