The RM Fieldbook
john deere new products release

New Deere workhorses dig and doze in comfort

John Deere Construction Equipment has combined muscle with comfort in its new line of industrial workhorses: four G-series backhoe loaders, the 700H dozer and the 17ZTS excavator.

The G-series backhoe loaders have the same digging features as the E-series they replace, but with a focus on comfort and convenience. Two doors — the narrowest in the industry — seal tight against dust and water. Handholds at just the right height let operators get in and out easily. Inside, the cab has 14 percent more floor area and 29 percent more glass, including a three-piece stacking rear window. And broken or cracked glass won’t keep these G-machines parked — replacement glass can be found at most local auto or glass retailers. And check the view when the optional light package is turned on — illumination around the G-series is increased by 400 percent.

The 700H dozer is the new heavyweight in Deere’s four-model H-series. This 25,800-lb. powerhouse runs with a John Deere turbo-charged Powertech 6068T engine, providing 115 net hp at 2,100 rpm. Its dual-path hydrostatic drive automatically adjusts speed to load, and it’s the only crawler in its class capable of smooth, full-power turns, counter-rotation and infinite speed selection. Adjustable pitch on the six-way, all-hydraulic blade lets the 700H match working conditions. A reverse ratio-control dial adjusts to ground conditions. And all that mountain-moving power is literally at your fingertips with the 700H’s responsive, hand-contoured joystick positioned at just the right height.

Maintenance? The 700H’s lockable, hinged engine doors give easy access to service points and spin-on hydraulic and transmission filters and batteries.

Small but mighty, that’s the new 17ZTS excavator, the fourth and smallest in Deere’s zero-tail-swing compact line. The 3,800-lb. 17ZTS stands 41¼2 ft. wide, digs to 71¼4 ft., and, combined with its independent-swing boom, can rotate 360 degrees within the width of its tracks. This baby can fit and work nearly anywhere the big boys can’t.

Its two-speed propel system is controlled with levers or pedals; a control valve easily switches the hydraulic controls from excavator- to backhoe-operating patterns; and a standard mechanical quick-coupler allows attachments to be interchanged between the 17ZTS and Deere’s skid-steer line.

Tilt-hood access and a swing-out front panel make the G-series service friendly. The fuel tank, with a bigger fill neck, is on the same side as daily service points.
G-series stabilizers are pinned to prevent flip-over, and cylinders are positioned away from the bucket (right). Fenders are another nifty G-series addition.
G-series backhoe loaders range from the 12,800-lb. 310, with an 83-net-hp engine, digging depth of 14 ft. 2 in. and lifting capacity of 5,800 lbs.; to the 15,000-lb. 410 model, with a turbocharged 98-net-hp engine, digging depth of 15 ft. 8 in. and lifting capacity of 7,340 lbs. Above is the top-end 410G.
The mini 17ZTS (left) has a big-boy breakout force of 3,042 lbs. and 13-ft. reach. It is powered by a 12.3-hp diesel engine.

The 700H dozer’s narrow dash
and tapered, sloped non-glare hood allow
operators a full view of the blade.
